Emergency declared across Sri Lanka and curfew imposed in western province with immediate effect

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared a state of emergency across Sri Lanka and a curfew in the western province with immediate effect.

Wickremesinghe has also ordered the security forces to arrest those acting in a riotous manner.

However, Police used tear gas to disperse a group of protesters protesting near the Prime Minister’s office on Flower Road in Colombo earlier in the morning.

The Protesters were calling for resignation of Prime Minister alongside that of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Mr. Rajapaksa has said that he will announce his resignation today but left for the Maldives under tight security early this morning.

However, Mr. Wickremesinghe is yet to respond to the demands of the citizens of the island nation.

On other hand, various Srilankan media outlets reported that Maldivians and Sri Lankan expatriates are protesting near Maldives President’s house urging the authorities to send Sri Lankan President out of Maldives.
