Education Budget 2022: Digital University, Centres of Excellence for Urban Planning to be set up | Key Highlights

Union Budget 2022 is being presented today. This is the 10th budget by the Modi Government and the Finance Minister, Niramala Sitharaman’s fourth budget. Giving another impetus to the pandemic affected education sector, the Union Budget focussed on providing access to students. From expanding the present PM eVidya Scheme and launch of Digital University was suggested. Check out the key highlights for the Education Sector here.

Education Budget 2022: Key Highlights

  1. Agriculture University syllabus would be revised to accommodate the need of natural, zero-budget and organic farming and modern day agriculture
  2. One Class One TV Channel To counter the loss of learning due to the pandemic, the PM eVidya Scheme to be expanded from 12 channels to 200 channels to facilitate supplementary learning for all classes 1 to 12 in regional languages
  3. Digital University to be developed and launched with an aim to provide access to world class quality education to the students
  4. Skilling programs will be reoriented. For skilling, upskilling & reskilling of our youth, Digital DESH e-portal will be launched
  5. Quality e content to be made through various means. teachers to be trained to use better e teaching outcomes
  6. 5 Centres of Excelennece to be set with an endowment fund of Rs. 250 crore each for Urban Planning courses that would assist in Urban Sector Development
  7. Academic Institutes to be encourages and supported for Research and Development within the ambit of Defence Budget.

The pandemic has been rather a mixed bag for the education sector. Continued closures of schools and colleges have had a large impact on the learning outcomes. The economic strain was felt in the enrollment of students as well. On the plus side, however, the shift to the digital medium has hastened the growth of ed-tech companies and helped in a spurt within the sector. Ahead of the budget, industry experts hoped for decisive steps in the direction of education and a higher outlay towards the development of the sector.
