WHO chief warns against talk of ‘endgame’ in pandemic
World Health Organization (WHO) Chief has warned that it is dangerous to assume the Omicron variant of COVID-19 will be the last one to emerge and that the world is in the end game of the pandemic. He said, conditions remain ideal for more coronavirus variants to emerge.
During the WHO executive board meeting, the UN health agency’s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, however said that, if tools such as testing and vaccines are used in a comprehensive manner, it would be possible for the world to exit the acute phase of the pandemic, this year.
Mr. Tedros laid out an array of achievements and concerns in global health over issues like reducing tobacco use, fighting resistance to anti-microbial treatments, and risks of climate change on human health.
But he said ending the acute phase of the pandemic must remain their collective priority. Mr.Tedros urged for discipline and unity in combatting the coronavirus.
