UGC finalizes guidelines on ‘Dual Degree’ Programme across higher education institutions

In order to provide much-required flexibility to students, University Grants Commission (UGC) is all set to announce guidelines for dual-degree programmes. This is in line with strengthening various components of the National Education Policy (NEP). The information regarding the ‘dual-degree’ programme was extended in an online media briefing held by UGC Chairperson M.Jagadesh Kumar, today, i.e 12th April 2022.

In the briefing, UGC Chairperson said, “The commission has decided to issue guidelines which will enable the students to pursue two academic programmes simultaneously.” He further added that NEP 2020 emphasises the need to facilitate multiple pathways to learning.

It is been noted that the physical and online modes of education should be used to extend freedom and flexibility to students to acquire multiple skills. Keeping this in view, UGC has framed new guidelines that will help in identifying and fostering the unique potential of each student by taking different courses as part of their physical university.

Sneak Peek into New Guidelines:

The new guidelines approved by the commission say that:

– A student can pursue the full-time academic programme in a physical mode, provided that in such cases the timings of one programme do not overlap with the close timings of the other programme.

– Under this programme, the student can opt for either a physical programme, a combination of the physical or online programme, or both online programmes.

– It is important to note that the admission criteria to the courses will be decided by the respective universities.
These programmes will be only applicable in diplomas, undergraduates and post-graduates programmes.

Prof Kumar stated that these guidelines will come into effect once the UGC announces on its official website. The release of the guidelines will take place on Wednesday, i.e 13th April 2022 on the official website.
