Journey of this Project: Four decades of delay v\s 4 years of renewed focus

The work on the project began in 1978 but due to lack of continuity of budgetary support, interdepartmental coordination, and adequate monitoring, it got delayed and was not completed even after nearly four decades.

Consequently, in 2016, the project was brought under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana and a target was set to complete it in a time-bound manner.

Accordingly, new innovative solutions were found for new land acquisitions to construct new canals, fill the critical gaps in the project, and resolve the pending litigation related to the previous land acquisitions. The renewed focus on the project resulted in it being completed in only about four years.

Saryu Nahar National Project to benefit about 29 lakh farmers

This project has been built with a total cost of more than Rs. 9800 crore, wherein more than Rs 4600 crore was provisioned in the last four years. Saryu Nahar National Project involves the interlinking of five rivers, namely, Ghaghara, Saryu, Rapti, Banganga, and Rohini that intends to ensure superlative usage of water resources of the region.

With this project, the government has assured water for irrigation of over 14 lakh hectares of land, this, in turn, will benefit about 29 lakh farmers of over 6200 villages. Nine districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh namely – Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Gonda, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur, and Maharajganj will reap the benefits of this project.
