Tourists have been banned from visiting the famous waterfall and the coracle operation is also suspended. The inflow into the Mullaperiyar Dam near Theni is also registering a gradual rise in water level due to rain in its catchment areas.
AIR correspondent reports that the Central Water Commission has issued an advisory warning to nine districts in Tamil Nadu due to heavy inflow into the River Cauvery. They include Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Karur and Namakkal. A warning in May, which is considered a dry month, is considered to be a rare event.
The water inflow into the Mettur Dam since this morning is 29-thousand cusecs, which is expected to rise close to fifty thousand cusecs by this night as early tomorrow, says, irrigation officials. Rain activity in the catchment areas of River Cauvery in Karnataka and Kerala has helped to maintain healthy storage of water in Mettur Dam, brightening the prospects of timely release for the next season of crops.
