Sri Lanka’s central bank governor Ajith Nivard submits resignation
In Sri Lanka, the governor of central bank Ajith Nivard has said that he submitted his resignation. The news came just hours after all cabinet ministers offered to resign in the midst of the country’s biggest political and economic crisis in decades. The central bank was due to make an interest rate decision on Tuesday.
The currency has lost more than 30% of its value against the US dollar since it was devalued last month. A severe shortage of foreign currency has left the government unable to pay for essential imports, including fuel in the country. Meanwhile, angry protestors have also been calling for the country’s prime minister and president to step down.
