Possibility of build-up of cyclone in Bay of Bengal; Odisha, Andhra Pradesh on alert

  • Parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra are expected to receive rainfall on December 1

Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are expected to receive heavy from November 30 (Tuesday) to December 2 (Thursday). There is a huge possibility that a low-pressure area may be formed over the south Andaman Sea which is expected to eventually build up into a cyclone. The cyclonic storm is expected to affect Odisha and Andhra.

“A Low Pressure Area is likely to form over south Andaman Sea by tomorrow (November 30). It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over Southeast and adjoining Eastcentral Bay of Bengal during subsequent 48 hours,” the IMD stated.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra has also said that Odisha is likely to receive rainfall from December 2 to December 5 and also said that there is a possibility of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal in the first week of December.

“The low pressure area is likely to become more marked and the system will have the potential to take the shape of a cyclone in the Bay of Bengal. However, we can give more information, including on the intensity of rainfall and wind speed, after formation of the low pressure area on November 30,” Mohapatra said.

IMD scientist RK Jenamani said that Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand might also experience rainfall and the overall weather would undergo many changes.

A fresh active Western Disturbance is likely to affect northwest and adjoining central India from the night of November 30, 2021. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted over Gujarat on December 1. The western state is expected to experience heavy rainfall on December 2.

Konkan and central Maharashtra may receive isolated heavy rainfall on December 1.

West Madhya Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh are projected to receive scattered rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning from December 1-2. Isolated heavy rainfall likely over southeast Rajasthan on December 2.
