India elected to UNESCO World Heritage Committee for four years term
On Thursday, India was elected as a member of the United Nations World Heritage Committee for a four-year term. This comes after a week India was re-elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). India got elected to the World Heritage Committee with 142 votes.
The UN Committee is responsible for allocating World Heritage funds, providing financial assistance to countries for maintaining World Heritage sites. The body also implements the World Heritage Convention.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar claimed it to be a good day for Indian diplomacy. He also said that Praveen Sinha has been elected to the Executive Committee of Interpol.
On Thursday, S Jaishankar said on Twitter “Good day for Indian diplomacy. Elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for 2021-25. Praveen Sinha also elected to the INTERPOL_HQ Executive Committee. Keep it up Team MEA.”
A tweet by India to UNESCO said, “India gets elected to the World Heritage Committee with 142 votes for a four-year term from 2021-25!”. Re-election was conducted by UNESCO, which India won on November 17 for the 2021-25 term.
On Thursday, Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi tweeted, “Happy to announce that India has won the seat on World Heritage Committee from the Asia Pacific region. I thank all our supporters for leading us to this historic win.”
“Matter of great pride that India is once again the member of the prestigious 21 nation world heritage committee (WHC) from 2021-25. This is India’s 4th term in the WHC. Congratulations India and Team ASI,” Minister of Tourism, Culture, G Kishan Reddy said in a tweet on Thursday.
Last week, re-election was conducted for the 2021-25 term to the Executive Board of the UN cultural organization which India won by 164 votes.
