India condemns Ukraine’s Bucha killings in strongest terms amid Zelenskyy impassioned address
India in the strongest of words condemned the killing of civilians in Ukraine’s Bucha. Adddressing the Security Council briefing the Ambassador also called for an independent probe into the allegedly horrifying incidents.
“The situation in Ukraine has not shown any significant improvement since the Council last discussed the issue. The security situation has only deteriorated, as well as its humanitarian consequences. Recent reports of civilian killings in Bucha are deeply disturbing. We unequivocally condemn these killings and support the call for an independent investigation,” Ambassador Tirumurti said.
Reiterating its call for immediate cessation of violence, Ambassador Tirumurti said, “India continues to be deeply concerned at the worsening situation in Ukraine. We have emphasized right from the beginning of the conflict the need to pursue the path of diplomacy and dialogue. When innocent human lives are at stake, diplomacy must prevail as the only viable option.”
All need peace: President Zelenskyy
In an impassioned address to the UN Security Council, the Ukrainian President demanded ‘accountability’ for Russian ‘crimes’ and rallied against the Security Council for its ineffectiveness to take any action against Russia for its military intervention in Ukraine.
“We are dealing with a State that is turning the veto of the United Nations Security Council into the right to die. If it continues, countries will rely not on international law or global institutions to ensure security, but rather, on the power of their own arms,” President Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy further called for Russia’s expulsion from the powerful Security Council.
“Either remove the Russian Federation as a source of war so it can no longer block decisions made about its own aggression, or simply dissolve yourselves altogether if there is nothing to do other than engage in conversation. Are you ready to close the United Nations? Do you think that the time for international law is gone,” the Ukrainian President said.
In wake of Russian forces’ withdrawal from the area, videos and footages of bodies with signs of torture have emerged on streets and in yards from the Ukrainian town of Bucha calling global outcry over the incident.
Russia denies alleged killing of Ukrainian civilian in Bucha
On the other hand, however Moscow categorically denied the Ukrainian allegations of killing of civilians in the town of Bucha.
In reply to accusations against Russian forces criminality in Bucha, the Russian Ambassador to United Nations Vassily Nebenzia blamed Kyiv and the Western media for promoting “flagrant inconsistencies” and said that there are, in fact, recordings of Ukrainian radicals shooting civilians.
Earlier addressing a briefing, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said, “I assure you that Russian military is nothing that it is being accused of, in particular what regards “cruel atrocities” against civil population. It is not the case.We have factual evidence that proves this point.”
World condemns the alleged atrocities against the Ukrainian civilians
The alleged atrocities by the Russian troops in the Ukrainian town of Bucha has sparked the global outcries of “war crimes” from the international community.
The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres also called for an independent investigation into the alleged killings of Ukrainian civilians in Bucha, a suburb of the capital Kyiv.
“I am deeply shocked by the images of civilians killed in Bucha, Ukraine. It is essential that an independent investigation leads to effective accountability,” said UN Security General Antonio Guterres.
Echoing her support with the Secretary General’s call for independent investigation into the killings of scores in the Ukrainian town of Bucha, UN Human Rights Chief Michelle Bachelet said, “I am horrified by the images of civilians lying dead on the streets & in improvised graves in the town of Bucha. It is vital that all efforts are made to ensure independent & effective investigations into what happened in Bucha.”
Appalled by the alleged atrocities, President of the EU Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen said, “I spoke with President Zelenskyy about the atrocious murder of civilians in Bucha and elsewhere in Ukraine. The EU is ready to send Joint Investigation Teams to document war crimes in coordination with the Ukrainian Prosecutor General.”
Condemning the attack, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, “The discovery of more mass graves outside Kyiv is sickening. The UK will not stand by whilst this indiscriminate and unforgivable slaughter takes place. We are working to ensure those responsible are held to account. We will not rest until justice is done.”
Extending solidarity with the people of Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “We strongly condemn the murder of civilians in Ukraine, remain committed to holding the Russian regime accountable, and will continue to do everything we can to support the people of Ukraine. Those responsible for these egregious and appalling attacks will be brought to justice.”
