Igloo cafe said to be the world’s largest set up in Jammu and Kashmir; can seat 40 guests

An igloo cafe, that recently started operations in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg, has become the most talked-about tourist attraction in the union territory.

‘Snowglu’ has been set up at the famous ski resort of Gulmarg. It is 37.5 feet tall and 44.5 feet in diameter and is being dubbed as the world’s largest igloo cafe with a seating capacity of 40 guests.

Syed Wasim Shah, the creator of the igloo, claimed the structure to be the world’s largest cafe of its kind.

“I saw this concept in Switzerland a few years back where they have such hotels, which are equipped with sleeping facilities as well. I thought Gulmarg sees a lot of snow and why not start this concept here,” Shah told PTI.

Shah added that he created an igloo cafe in 2021, which apparently became Asia’s biggest.

He said that according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the current record holder is an igloo in Switzerland that has a height of 33.8 feet and a diameter of 42.4 feet. Shah went on to claim that the one in Gulmarg is bigger.

Mahur, a member of the Igloo cafe, said the management has already applied for the World Record.

“It’s the world’s largest Igloo cafe. We have applied for the World record which is under process. The last world record is from Switzerland in 2016, we have surpassed that. It’s 37.5 feet tall and 44.5 feet diameter,” said Mahur, member of Igloo Café.

“There are two sections here. One for seating and one for art space, wall carvings. We have used sheep’s skin as seat covers. It took us two months to complete its construction. Visitors can enjoy traditional Kashmiri cuisine here,” she added.

As of now, the cafe has ten tables and is spacious enough to accommodate 40 diners. It also has a staircase.

Shah said 25 people worked on the cafe to complete the construction in just 64 days.

“It has a thickness of five feet. We hope it stands till March 15, after which we will close it for the public,” he said
