Home Minister Amit Shah says maintaining law and order is govt’s top priority; calls for modernisation of prisons
Union Home and cooperation minister Amit Shah urged all the states to pay attention to improving security and facilities at the prisons. He asked all the states to adopt the Modern Prison Code introduced by the Narendra Modi government in 2016 for better Prison management.
He also stressed the modernisation of the prisons and reinduction of those who are not natural, born or habitual criminals in society.
Addressing the gathering after the inauguration of the 6th All India Prison Meet at TransStadia in Ahmedabad, Mr Shah said the view with which jails are seen in society needs to be changed.
Stressing upon technology for better Prison administration, the minister said like court, video conferencing facility needs to be set up in all the prisons across the country. He also asked states to equip jails with libraries, training centres, hospital and mental health centres for the well-being of the prisoners.
The Home Minister also stated that overcrowded jails are one of the biggest problems which need to resolve for better management of our prisons.
Speaking on the occasion, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said the 6th Prison Meet will help in the process of jail reforms and better Prison management in the country.
The three-day meet is jointly organized by the Bureau of Police Research and Development and Gujarat Police. More than 1000 officers and employees of various prisons from across the country will participate in the meet and take part in 18 different competitions and games including music, quiz, unarmed combat, volleyball, and Kabaddi.
Gujarat Minister of State for Home Affairs Harsh Sanghavi and union Home secretary Ajay Bhalla were present on the occasion.
Earlier today, Mr. Shah inaugurated four smart schools of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporations built at the cost of 9.54 crore rupees.
