From vaccinations for children to third dose for senior citizens: Highlights of PM Modi’s address

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced an expansion of the ongoing vaccination drive to include children between the ages of 15-18 years.
  • He also announced that senior citizens and co-morbid individuals would be able to get a third vaccine dose from January next year.
  • As of Saturday morning, India has 77,032 active COVID-19 cases. The country has so far reported more than 400 cases of the newly detected Omicron variant of COVID-19.

New Delhi: As India’s Omicron tally continues to rise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Saturday. 

Here are the highlights of his speech:

  1. India will start COVID-19 vaccination for 15-18-year-olds from January 3. 
  2. Precaution dose of vaccine to be given to frontline and health care workers from Jan 10.
  3. Those above 60 years of age and with comorbidities can also avail of the ‘precaution dose’ of the COVID-19 vaccine based on the recommendation of their doctors.
  4. Emphasising that this was not a time to panic, the Prime Minister called upon people to be careful and to continue using masks and following hand sanitisation measures.
  5. The PM said that a nasal vaccine and the world’s first DNA vaccine would soon join the fight against COVID-19 in India.
  6. Modi said that over 90% of the eligible adult population had already received their first dose. More than 61% have gotten both doses, he added.
