Climate action a mission for life: PM Modi

Highlighting the central government’s steps to tackle climate change, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that India’s climate action to achieve net-zero carbon emission target is not only a promise but also a mission for life.

Addressing a gathering during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Patancheru in Hyderabad, Modi said, “India has set a target of net-zero carbon emission by 2070. It’s a mission for life. It’s a lifestyle for saving the environment.”

He added that India has launched a “pro planet people” movement that connects every community, every individual with climate responsibility to tackle the challenge.

“It (Climate action) is not limited to just words but is also reflected in the actions of the Government of India,” Modi emphasised.

“In Union Budget 2022, the government has prioritised climate action. The Budget encourages India’s commitment for a green future,” Modi said.

He said that India’s small farmers are the worst-affected due to climate change.

“Even though climate change affects people across the globe but the most backward communities are the worst affected. People who have limited resources suffer the most. Small farmers are one of those groups who have suffered the most due to climate change. 80-85% of farmers in India are small farmers. Climate change is a major challenge for them,” Modi said.

He said that India’s focus is on “the fusion of ‘back to basic’ and ‘march to future’ to protect its farmers from climate challenge”.

During the event, Modi unveiled the institute’s Climate Change Research Facility and Rapid Generation Advancement facility. He also unveiled a specially designed logo to mark the launch of the event.

During his visit, PM Modi also unveiled the ‘Statue of Equality’ at Ramanujacharya Asharam in Rangareddy district’s Muchintal.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police (DGP) Mahender Reddy, along with other top police officials, ensured fool-proof security arrangements. At least 7,000 police personnel, including central teams were deployed to tighten security arrangements on Saturday.
