The Ministry of Home Affairs has restored FCRA registration for Missionaries of Charity, an organisation founded by Nobel laureate Mother Teresa, after it submitted the necessary document to the concerned department, government sources said on Saturday.
Earlier, the ministry had refused to renew the foreign funding licence of the Catholic religious congregation due to some “adverse inputs”.
“The renewal application under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) for the renewal of FCRA registration of Missionaries of Charity (MoC) was refused on 25 Dec 2021 for not meeting the eligibility conditions under FCRA 2010 and Foreign Contribution Regulation Rules (FCRR) 2011,” the MHA had said.
According to the ministry, the FCRA registration of Missionaries of Charity was valid up to December 31, 2021.
In a statement, the NGO had also said that its renewal under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) has not been approved by the government. It had also made it clear that no “freeze” has been ordered on any of its bank accounts.
“The FCRA registration of the Missionaries of Charity has been neither suspended nor cancelled. Further there is no freeze ordered by the Ministry of Home Affairs on any of our bank accounts. We have been informed that our FCRA renewal application has not been approved. Therefore, as a measure to ensure that there is no lapse, we have asked our centres not to operate any of the FC accounts until the matter is resolved,” the organisation had said.
The Missionaries of Charity issued the clarification after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Union Home Ministry froze all banks of the organisation.
