Govt plans to develop and operationalize 220 airports, heliports and water aerodromes in next five years
The Government has planned to develop and operationalize 220 airports, heliports and water aerodromes in the next five years. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia informed that till 2014, there were 74 airports with scheduled operations in the country and at present, the number of operational airports is 141 including 8 heliports and two water aerodromes. He said, increasing airport capacity is a continuous process and is undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and concerned private operators from time to time depending on the availability of land, commercial viability, socio-economic considerations and traffic demand.
