Human Rights Day 2021: Reducing inequalities and advancing human rights
Human Rights Day is commemorated on December 10th every year. On this day, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a landmark document that proclaims the inalienable rights that every human being is entitled to. It is the most translated document in the world, having been translated into over 500 languages.
This year’s Human Rights Day theme is ‘Equality,’ and it is based on Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Human rights are built around the principles of equality and non-discrimination.
The Human Rights Council is made up of 47 elected United Nations Member States who are tasked with preventing inequality, abuses, and discrimination, protecting the most vulnerable and punishing those who violate human rights.
Human Rights Day is significant, especially in light of Covid-19, which has increased poverty, inequality, discrimination, and other gaps in human rights protection.
On this day, the United Nations encourages nations to create equal opportunities for all the people and to address issues of inequality, exclusion, and marginalisation.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh has topped the list of human rights violation cases in India, data by the Ministry of Home Affairs revealed.
According to the data from the Ministry of Home Affairs, nearly 40% of human rights violation cases lodged annually by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in the previous three years until October 2021 were from Uttar Pradesh.
According to government data, as of October 31st, the NHRC had registered 64,170 cases of human rights violations.
In the last three years, the number of cases registered has decreased, the data revealed. In 2018, 2019, and 2020, the number of cases registered was 89,584,76,628 and 74,968, respectively.
